Chapter 4

A New Companion

A few uneventful weeks had passed since they found the mysterious blade and October has just begun. The cozy time for trees to shed their foliage to feed the ground for the harsh winter months. Kevin and Leah made a nice full hot chocolate to sit outside with, enjoying the soft early autumn breeze during sunset in the back garden, with a new strange addition. Kevin holds out the hilt of the blade that he and Leah found on their little reminiscent adventure, looking at it closely and feeling the exquisite build.

“So how is it that you can talk anyway, sword?” Kevin asks the sword, bluntly.

The sword replies with a well-spoken, feminine delivery. “One hath always been fluent in speech, Rah. Doth this come as a shock to thee?”

Kevin replies “Who's Rah? You keep calling me that and I don't know who that is. And we don't have talking things in this world, the closest things we have are conjures but those are living things. Also, you've been stuck to me for weeks. Why is it when I put you down, you zipline back onto my wrist with magic ribbons? You're far from normal, swords don't do any of the things that you do.”

The blade replies- its voice still one-note. “One apologises if mine-own companionship is seen as a doting nuisance to thee. One's intention is to keep thou safe, Rah.”

“There you go again, calling me Rah- I'm not a dinosaur, I'm Kevin.”

“Thou barest the exalted flaming nimbus of the sun spirit, Rah. Thy physical form hast undergone many changes over the centuries- yet inside thy memories endure deep within, and thou art still the spirit of the Sun.”

This kind of talk and bickering had been happening since Kevin brought the sword home- against his will at that. He stands up with a groan of discontent slipping between his lips. Leah turns to ask. “Where are you heading to at this hour?”

Kevin replies. “I'm gonna take a trip to the market to see if I can get rid of this magic sentient smart speaker.”

Leah responds in shock. Not much, but enough to widen her eyes. “But you just got her- she's gotta be important to you somehow, she did whatever it was with your halo to make it disappear. I think this is a dumb idea.”

“Look, I'm willing to keep a talking sword but not one that has an answer for everything I say and constantly misnames me among the MANY other things it does that pisses me off. It's going and that's final.”

Leah sighs. “Alright... Just don't get into trouble, okay?”

Kevin gives his sister a single downwards nod. He jumps the fence and launches off towards the town at what he considers a relaxed pace, running down the autumn green fields, watching the trees and grass fly by as he soars on through.

The sword begins to nag Kevin once more. the frustrating part to him being her monotone voice, sounding almost robotic... “Doth thou truly plan
